POP can be silver halide based, iron based, dichromate based, or polymer based. Iron based system can form image consisting of compounds of iron (cyanotype), silver (van dyke brown, kallitype) or member of platinum family (platinum/palladium print). Dichromate based processes use dichromate together with mildly reducing polymers, such as gum arabic, gelatin, casein, albumen, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(acrylic acid) and other hydrophillic synthetic polymers. These are generally UV-sensitive processes that are suitable for contact printing only.
